Welday Walker The brother of Fleet Walker, he attended Oberlin College and played on the school baseball team as a right fielder. In 1884, when the Toledo team of the American Association found itself shorthanded in the outfield due to injuries, he joined his brother on the ballclub, making him the second black player ever with a major-league team. |
Playing in only 5 games, he hit .222 with Toledo, and never played in the major leagues again. He did play with minor-league teams, including Akron in the Ohio State League and Cleveland in the Western League.
He also played as an outfielder with the Pittsburgh Keystones, one of eight teams that were charter members of the League of Colored Baseball Clubs in 1887. However, the league folded within a week.
