"The Renaissance Years"

 Volume 2: 1920 - 1929

In 1920, Chicago American Giants owner Rube Foster met with owners of the independent black professional teams at the Paseo YMCA in Kansas City, Missouri. This union of baseball minds formed the first organized black league to survive a full season - the Negro National League.

For many years, Captain Rube struggled without a life preserver in his attempts to keep his boat afloat. He gave IOU's, advances, and sometimes loaned players to struggling franchises, attempting to balance the power and talent around the circuit.  Foster argued that their exclusion from the National Pastime, was a symbolic rip in the red-white-blue flag. His struggles became our successes, as black ball exploded in popularity and power, to boldly go where no black organization had gone before-- becoming an integral part of baseball Americana.
