The Negro leagues spanned
from the late 1880's on up until 1947, which was when Jackie Robinson made history by
becoming the first African American to play in the Major leagues with the Brooklyn
Dodgers.

postal clerk Edward Bolden. Based in Darby, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia,
the club would later play in the first Colored World Series of 1924.

1925 Hilldale Giants The fellows out of Darby, Pennsylvania,
won the second Colored World Series, defeating the Kansas City Monarchs, reversing the
previous year's defeat. Giants from left to righ (front row) Clint Thomas, Rube
Currie, Paul CArter, Tom Allen, bat-boy, ? Lambert, Frank WArfield, Otto Briggs, Joe
Lewis, and Jake Stephens, (back row) Script Lee, Phil Cockrell, Biz Mackey, Nip Winters,
George Carr, Zip Campbell, manager Ed Bolden, Lewis Hampton, Wilbur Pritchett, Judy
Johnson, Red Ryan and Louis Santop. The Giants won 45 out of 58 games (.776).

The 1919 Detroit Stars The best looking unifors in the black
leagues belong to the 1919 Detroit Stars. Managed by Tenny Blount ( in sweater), his
top player was Pete Hill, (fifth from the left)j. They played out of historic Mack
Park. The Stars were one of the original members of the Negro National League in
1920. They spotlighted one of the great home run hitters in baseball history, Norman
"Turkey" Stearnes. Another star was catcher Bruce Petway who twice threw

1928 St. Louis Stars The Stars defeated the Chicago American
Giants, five games to four to win the Negro National League pennant. Stars from left to right (front row) bat boy, John
Russell, Cool Papa Bell, Branch Russell, Richard Cannon, Roosevelt Davis, Wilson Redus and
Luther McDonald; (back row) manager Candy Jim Taylor, Clarence Palm, Ted Trent, Mule
Suttles, J. Williams, Henry Williams, and Dewey Creacy.
The Stars won 66 of 92 games (.717).

1924 Kansas City Monarchs The 1924 Kansas City Monarchs won the first Negro World Series, defeating the Hilldale Giants from Darby, PA, in a thrilling 10-game series, 5-4 with one tie. That season, the Monarchs reeled off a pair of 14 game winning streaks. They were led by Wilber "Bullet" Rogan, perhaps the most complete player in Negro league history. Rogan not only led the Monarch pitching staff with 16 wins, he batted an incredible .421 that season.

This edition of barnstorming bronze stars were not members of any league, but had a record 11 players participate in the East-West All-Star game that year. Front row: (left to right) Newt Allen, Harry Else, Bullet Rogan, Henry Milton and Eddie Dwight; (back row) Andy Cooper, Pat Patterson, Woody Wilson, Chick Harris, Floyd Kranson, Bob Madison, Willard Brown and Leroy Taylor. Rogan represents the Monarchs in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

1948 Birmingham Black Barons The Alabama bombers won the Negro American League pennant by 10 games. They won 57 of 78 games (.731). The Black Barons from left to right; Herman Bell, Pepper Bassett, Rev. Bill Greason, Joe Scott, Roosevelt (bat boy), Jay Heard, Wiley Griggs, Piper Davis, Alonzo Perry, Jim Newberry, Jim Zapp, Ed Steele, Johnny Britt, Artie Wilson, Pat Pollard, Willie Powell, and Willie Mays. This was Mays' firstof three seasons with the Birmingham club.

The Eagles won 47 of 63 games (.746) with future Hall of Famers, Irvin and Doby in their lineup.
