JOSH GIBSON
(1911-47) - In today's Major Leagues, Mark Mc Gwire and Sammy Sosa have broken Roger Maris's home run record of 61 homers by hitting 70 and 66 respectively. A note worth mentioning, Joshua (Josh) Gibson played his entire 17 year career in the Negro leagues for the Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1929 to 1946. He was known as the "Black Babe Ruth" because of his indomitable presence in the batters box that personified power and electrified crowds. Josh Gibson is the true "Home Run King." He finished his career hitting 962 home runs and holds the single season home run record by hitting 75 homers in 1931 and went on to top that in 1936 by hitting 84 in 170 games. Mr. Gibson once hit 44 homers in 450 at bats with an .802 slugging percentage. At the ripe young age of 35, Josh suffered a fatal stroke. Some say his untimely death was from the disappointment of not being able to become the first black Major League baseball player. |
The American sports world suffered a greater loss by not being able to witness his greatness in the Major Leagues. In 1972, Joshua Gibson was inducted into the Hall of Fame as one of the greatest players ever to play the game, White or Black.
